Design Inspiration | Sarapes 2

I'm doing a series on my San Miguel Collection prints and am collaborating with interior stylist Mylene Raspado

This week I'm featuring: Sarapes 2

The textile industry is a very important part of Mexico’s economy. The foot petal loom was introduced to Mexico after the Spanish conquest, and was most widely used in the central and northern parts of Mexico, allowing for bigger pieces to be made.

I remember my parents owning a restaurant when I was younger called “El Zarape”. I went there a few times when they first opened. They chose to have sombreros and sarapes hanging on the walls as decoration. When the restaurant closed, all the decor came home with us. I would love trying on all the sombreros and looking through the colorful blankets; picking out my favorites.

When I went to college, I took a sarape with me as a blanket. My roommates would make comments about how bright and colorful it was, but it was a piece of my culture that I could have with me among the very rural Michigan community.

The Mexican culture as a whole is very bright, colorful, and happy. I love the colors in sarapes, but I’m also drawn to neutral decor. I like a nice statement piece to tie a room together, or add that splash of color. This vibrant picture can do that while still keeping the feel of the room neutral.

I love the warmth of the pinks, greens, and browns of this life style board. It reminds me of a girl who’s grown into a young adult and has kept her feminine style but added sophistication. What do you think? I’d love to hear in the comments.

Design Inspiration | Papel Picado

I'm doing a series on my San Miguel Collection prints and am collaborating with interior stylist Mylene Raspado

This week I'm featuring: Papel Picado

Papel picado came about during the 19th century, and was made using a chisel. First, an intricate design is drawn on paper and covered with plastic to protect the original drawing. To make several copies at once they stack many sheets together and chisel the design out.

This print is a favorite in our house. Ever since the movie Coco came out, whenever the kids see papel picado they’re automatically filled with joy; so when they saw this print in our house they were so excited and they called it the “Coco picture”.

I love this print for the living room. The colors in this print are vibrant and colorful, but you can still pair this with some neutral tones to make it a statement piece without overwhelming the room with color. It’s inviting and sure to create some smiles and joyful conversation with your guests.

Design Inspiration | El Arbol Bougainvillea

I'm doing a series on my San Miguel Collection prints and am collaborating with interior stylist Mylene Raspado

This week I'm featuring: El Arbol Bougainvillea

You can find this plant in warm climates and even though they don’t require much water, they are evergreen if there’s rainfall all year. The flower itself if very fragile, thin, and paper-like, and usually doesn’t last long after they’re picked from the vine. Its colors include magenta, purple, red, orange, pink, white, and yellow. A tree in full bloom offers a breath-taking explosion of color.

I love this piece for a kid's room. It's vibrant colors are sure to catch a little kid's attention and inspire curiosity. Parents who create wonder about different places in this world will raise their kids to respect and embrace other people easily...which should be our goal.

Design Inspiration | Nopales

I'm doing a series on my San Miguel Collection prints and am collaborating with interior stylist Mylene Raspado.

The week I'm featuring: Nopales

While cactus and succulents are a popular addition to homes due to their low maintenance, especially among the younger generation in the US, it’s nice to remember that the earliest encounters with cacti are from Central and South America.

This cactus wall is found in a little store, Mixtas, in San Miguel de Allende. It is filled with handmade home decor, clothing, and textiles. For the traveler who finds inspiration in nature, and neutral warm colors. This is a great addition to a living room especially to accent any plants already used for home decor. Pairing this photo with colorful baskets and other textured wall art will really give the space that inviting and adventurous spirit.

Design Inspiration | Yellow Alley

I'm doing a series on my San Miguel Collection prints and am collaborating with interior stylist Mylene Raspado. I'm hoping to make it easier for you to picture these fine art photographs in your home by giving you two mood boards and color palettes.

The week I'm featuring: Yellow Alley. Family is one of the most important parts of Mexican culture. In many homes, you'll often find three or more generations living together. Behind the walls of these homes you'll find families enjoying each other's company and fully involved in each other's lives.

The colors in this print really make my neutral design heart happy. While I'm not usually drawn to yellow, I love how you can pair this print with grays, whites and browns for a sleek yet comfortable office space. My husband recently moved into my office,🙄 and I think a design like this would make us both happy.

An entryway is a small and easy space to redecorate. By switching out a piece of art, a plant or a rug, it can really make it feel like a fresh new house upon entering. I love the lighter neutrals here paired with a darker print. I especially love grey for a wall color. What do you think?
